Reasons for choosing
There was no topic requirement for this assignment, but we were asked to review and reflect on the new knowledge and skills which we had learned during this year and apply them to our work at this time. It was also mentioned in the assessment brief that we would need to choose a specialist area for our second year of study.
For this assignment I chose to produce sound for a short movie, because I want to get into more professional screen sound production and sound design in my second year of study. At the same time, my friend who is studying Film Production at the University of Portsmouth needed to make his final short film for his undergraduate degree and he invited me to be part of his production team. So I decided to submit a sound clip excerpt from this film.
Through the feedback of last assignment, I realised that I am not usually to thinking sound from itself. For example, why did I choose this sound. Most of the reasons were I thought this sound sounded comfortable when I put it into this piece. But I didn’t think why only this sound sounded good when put into this piece. Is it because its frequency fits the frequency of the other sounds in this piece? Or is it because it fills in the gaps created by the other sounds in this piece? In this assignment I will focus my attention more on the sound itself. As the course description in the handbook says, listening plays a central role in the whole process of learning sound.
At this stage, I have not only started a short film project, but I have also worked on a game with game students from our school. But this game is not finish yet, so I couldn’t submit it as this assignment.
This is part of the sound effects for the attack skills I designed for this game, and I am now moving on to the monster sound effects stage.
