Week 2 – “A so-called archive” A/V Installation by Onyeka Igwe
This week I went to see Onyeka Igwe’s A so-called archive and I really enjoyed the way it was presented. Onyeka Igwe imagined the lost memories of the two archives and reconstructed them with images and sound. I enjoyed the experience of looking at the empty, dilapidated scenes and listening to the sounds that do not belong in the images. Through these voices, combined with the images in front of me, I could imagine what the scene once looked like. I watched all three versions, and the OC(Open Caption) version provided a much richer visual experience. I remember one scene where the sound of people talking in an empty space came from different directions, and the subtitles would appear from different parts of the screen according to these sounds. Finally, there is the AD(Audio Description) version, which feels like the broadcast I mentioned in my previous blog. The voice of the author’s introduction is the narrator, as she tells the story of her creation. The voice in the video is the story of the archive, and the two stories just intersect.
