5.1 Mixing stage for final assignment 2
Last week I contacted Jiachen again to help me change the composition of music.
Starting with the part that ended last week, I put the music produced by Jiachen into the session. The two melodies move clockwise and rapidly at the same speed. No sooner has the piano finished playing a melody than the violin and the black-winds play the same melody, as if in conversation. The other sounds (ambient sounds, the Sound of memory clips, breathing, footsteps, buzzing) are left untouched and fill the space. I like this effect now, two melodies in conversation in a space where reality and memory collide.
On to the third scene, The bar. My previous vision was to put ambient sound of this scene in each of the four directions, giving the audience the feeling of being wrapped up in the whole environment. But in reality, in addition to the four channels of L, R, RS and LS, I also used the two channels of C and LEF. In addition to the sound of the crowd discussing in the bar, I put in the sound of the vinyl record rubbing against the stylus as well. I also added the sound of a ventilation duct in the LFE channel, which is a very low hum. The sound wasn’t recorded on this set, it was recorded at a venue rented by another short film crew. There was a scene to be shot in a very run-down factory building, which had a room with a ventilation duct in the ceiling, which was exposed outside the walls. I wanted this clip to be filled with sound, the man wrapped in a confined space by sound, depressing, suffocating.
After roughly adjusting it, I watched it from start to finish and I realized that I had almost ignored LFE channel. I searched for sounds that could be played through the Subwoofer in this clip. A low frequency ambient sound at the beginning of the clip, the sound of vinyl rubbing against stylus and the echo of the sewers were all sounds that would fit perfectly on the LFE channel.
