Week 10 feedback

Talked to Ingrid this Monday and she suggested that I include interviews in the audio. I prepared the questions a few days ago and contacted a few friends to talk about their thoughts on the sound of games. One of the questions was which game’s sound impressed you? It an immersive environment, or a piece of music, or a few individual sound effects? It was clear from their answers that they were also love play games. They talked to me about some very classic games and also about some recently released games.

The next step after getting these sounds was to think about how to put them into this audio. People who play games create a character in the game, and these characters can be wizards, elves, robots, or any other kind of creature you can think of. What I’ve set up for this audio background is a cyberpunk style gaming community, and this community allow these creatures exist. And, when you think about it, it’s impossible to interview normal people on the streets of a gaming community.

I went about changing their voices based on the games they mentioned. Like the third person, who mentioned the game outer wilds, which is a game where an astronaut goes exploring the lost civilisations of the universe. So I wanted his voice to sound like he was talking with an astronaut helmet on. I first used the EQ plug-in to weaken the high frequencies and some of the lows in his voice, and then added a reverb to him.

ZZ didn’t dare to talk loudly when we were talking because everyone in the family was asleep. One of the games mentioned in ZZ’s interview was Days Gone, which was also a very interesting gaming experience. Unfortunately, due to its length, the segment ended up being removed.

Finally, in order to connect to the previously produced part, I turned the example of the League of Legends part into an interview. After recording, I went through the plug-in and turned up the pitch of this voice. I turned my voice into the voice of a little girl.

For the first part of the first version of the audio, I added a source music to this environment. But because the interview part was a bit long, it would have felt a bit boring to listen to three minutes of one piece of music. So when they mention a game the background music switches, for example when the second person mentions Star Wars, the music in the background changes to the theme song of the game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. For this section I also used the theme song from Dark Souls III: The Ringed City, Echoes of the eye by Outer Wilds, and League of Legends’ enemy.

I also added a few sentences to the last paragraph. It talks about a few sound effects that I really like from both Dark Souls 3 and Star Wars.
