Draft artist statement
I will record the exercises of my first class in this blog.
Exercise 1: introductions
1: Name
2: What is the medium (Form, Material)
3: Where do you share it? (gallery, label, theatre…)
4: 3 key words (what does it do? or feel like?)
My name is Jingya Li, and the main form of sound I produce is screen sound, including film, animation and games. I usually share them on the internet. The three keywords are immersion, soundscape and diegetic.
Exercise 2: wider contexts
Why do I make art? What are my interests?
Why do I work with my particular medium, material?
What themes or patterns emerge from the work?
Is my work influenced or inspired by anything/anyone?
Why is my work different to the next artist’s?
What is the single most important thing I want to explore/communicate through my work?
I don’t have the answers to every question. The original reason for making art was to tell a story, and at first, I chose the medium of film, and while studying film and television production, I discovered the power of sound. In the cinema, the low sound frequencies made my body shake. Sound allows the viewer to enter the picture of a film more quickly, it affects the emotions and senses more directly. So I finally chose sound to tell the story. I work with all kinds of screen sound, including film, animation and games. In my mind, sound and vision go hand in hand. The sound makes the vision more real, the picture makes the sound more vivid, and the two together can make the work more immersive. Screen sound is characterised by creating sound based on vision. Through my works, I want to tell, express and present a story, a thought, or a phenomenon.
Exercise 3: draft your statement
2-3 sentences outlining your practice.
Include the following elements when describing your work:
What is it?
Where is it?
What does it do?
How?
Why?
My sound work is focused on three areas: film, animation and games. Some work is shared online, and some get pitched to film festivals. My sound work is classified as screen sound based on visually created sound work. It is a form of storytelling that can immerse the person listening to it.
